Chiesa di Donnaregina: Interno

It's an ancient temple rebuilt at the beginning of the the XIV cent. for the will of Mary of Hungary, the wife of Charles II of Anjou. The sacred building consists of two churches, one of the XIV cent. and the other of the XVII cent. The 14th cent. church which one enters by Vico Donnaregina No. 25 is divided in two parts: in the lower part, one finds the "Sepolcro di Mario d'Ungheria" a masterpiece by sculptor Tino da Camaino (XIV cent.); in the upper part, on the walls, a cycle of frescos painted by Pietro Cavallino and pupils between 1310 and 1320. They are of first class importance for their artistic value as well as the history of Neapolitan painting. Starting from the right side: "Giudizio Universale", "Storia della vita di S. Caterina d'Alessandria" and "Storia di S. Orsola". The frescos represents: "The Martyrdom of S. Orsola". It is of the XVI cent. The other church, built in 1620-49, has an interior with coloured marbles and works of art, which are worthy of notice. Among these, there are frescos by F: Solimene in the ceiling of the transept (XVIII cent.) the polictic of the high altar (XVI cent.) a "Madonna with Child" a fresco of the XV cent.; on the altar of the 2nd chapel, on the right, there are also two canvases by Luca Giordano.
